Crucial Insights after the European Cup's First Round

With the opening salvo of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we delve into the key revelations emerging from the games.

Gallic supremacy has ruled the roost in the past few campaigns, with the past five winners all hailing from France's top flight. But, the opening round included multiple convincing performances from potential rivals.

Bordeaux Look Set to Go Back-to-Back

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were utterly dominant in the competition a year ago, dismantling Toulouse in the last four and afterwards Northampton in the final.

Positioned sixth in the Top 14, questions have been asked about their capacity to retain the title this season. However, in round one, Bordeaux sent a message that they are well-positioned of securing another trophy with a high-scoring win on the road in South Africa.

Handed a difficult tie at Loftus Versfeld against a formidable Bulls side including stars like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they found themselves trailing 33-22 at the break.

But, true to their champion status, they displayed their class in the second period, roaring back to secure a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls without a point after the break.

French try-scoring phenoms Damian Penaud and World Player of the Year nominee Louis Bielle-Biarrey both got on the scoresheet. Any outfit with such firepower on the flanks is a threat against any opponent.

Powerful Bath Appear Equipped of Challenging for the Title

Bath's sole success in the Champions Cup came almost a generation ago. In the years since, they have arguably not been better equipped to add a second star.

The current English champions are leading the way domestically after six games and will be aiming to transfer that success into continental competition – on the back of a surprise group-stage exit the previous season.

Johann van Graan's team looked a extremely well-rounded and composed outfit in their 40-14 win over Munster, who are among the leaders in the URC.

They combine creative spark – sealing the try-scoring point in under 20 minutes at the Rec – with resolute defending, keeping their opponents at arm's length when they threatened a fightback.

With players including Finn Russell and Ben Spencer in the half-backs and strength in depth throughout the squad, they must be viewed as credible threats for a continental title since 1998.

Bath's pivotal moment in the initial phase a year ago came in the next fixture, an narrow 22-21 defeat at Benetton with a rotated team.

Having secured a Premiership title under their belt and setting the pace in England once more, Van Graan may feel able to put a heightened focus on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Give Sale a Tough Start

The tournament contains powerful sides everywhere you look, but the first group seems destined to be one of the tightest.

In the existing pool system, a lot is emphasized regarding securing home wins, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on the first day might just be pivotal.

The team from Scotland were two scores behind after 20 minutes but responded with character, and two tries early in the second half gave them a precious five points.

By achieving this, they handed their prospects of qualification a significant early boost and, by contrast, handed a hefty blow to Sale.

With the red and blacks – dominant 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who brushed aside Clermont, in the same section, we can expect high-stakes drama.

And regarding Glasgow's traditional foes Edinburgh? They delivered one of their best European performances in a long time to surprise heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a successful weekend for Scottish rugby.

Will Ioane Be the Missing Ingredient of the Leinster Puzzle?

If there's one team you would predict to be there or thereabouts at the business end of the season in Europe, it would be European giants Leinster.

However in recent seasons it has not worked out, as they have shown great potential but not won the trophy. Finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites last season after backing up a 62-0 rout of Harlequins in the last 16 with a 52-0 demolition over Glasgow in the quarter-final.

It was believed that All Black star Jordie Barrett would be the key player to take them over the line, but they were ambushed and suffered a shock loss to Northampton Saints in the semi-final.

Now they are bringing in another Kiwi, this time with Rieko Ioane, who provided a scoring pass on his bow in Saturday's 45-28 victory against Harlequins.

Will Ioane prove to secure European glory to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Seem Prepared to Challenge

From the moment the SA franchises joined the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the furthest any of their teams have got is the quarter-finals, and in the last campaign not a single one was able to progress out of the group stage, with plenty of squads not at full strength selected.

Is this the year that turns around? The Stormers are first in the URC and began their Champions Cup adventure with a 26-17 away win at Bayonne on Friday.

The words from players and coaches were promising too, with individuals involved talking about their goals, and the caliber of Springboks Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse not involved for the first match.

The Stormers look the best bet for a team from South Africa to go deep into the event, although do not rule out the Sharks and Bulls, who each suffered defeat in the opening round but did face the French powerhouses respectively.

Saints and Pau Produce a Thrilling Contest

There were a few contenders for match of the round, and the Northampton vs. Pau game was right up there.

Pau have been experiencing a brilliant campaign, spearheaded by Argentine internationals Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and ex-England half-back Dan Robson.

They are presently in second place in the Top 14 and the atmosphere was electric at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
