The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
