Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
