The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
