In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
