Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
